Neil Young

"It's better to burn out than to fade away" is undeniably one of Neil Young's most famous lyrics. However, the singer-songwriter shows no signs of doing either anytime soon. For decades, he has been sharing his passions, whether related to music or to helping people, with the world.

The father of two sons with cerebral palsey, Neil co-founded The Bridge School in 1986 with wife, Pegi. Located outside of San Francisco, The Bridge School is an innovative place that educates children who have severe speech and physical impairments. To raise money and awareness for the school, Neil helps organize an annual concert, which over its twenty-plus-year history, has attracted some of the music industry's most venerable talent, including Sheryl Crow, Paul McCartney, ColdplayNo Doubt and Sarah McLachlan. In turn, Neil played the Summer Sessions at Ambleside, an all-day open-air charity concert to raise money for the Sarah McLachlan Foundation, which funds music outreach programs for inner-city Vancouver children.

Together with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp, Young started Farm Aid, an organization dedicated to keeping family farmers on their land. The three musicians organized the first Farm Aid concert in 1985 to draw attention to the loss of local family-run farms and to help raise money to benefit those affected. To date, Farm Aid has raised over $35 million to keep the family farm system going. He still remains on the organization's board of directors today.

Young also performed at Live Aid in 1985 and, twenty years later at Live 8. Touched by the tragic events of 9/11, Young appeared at the America: A Tribute to Heroes concert days after the attacks, performing a powerful rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine" to benefit victims and their families.

Toronto-native Neil Young was born on November 12, 1945. Known for his high-pitched voice and deeply soulful lyrics, the singer/songwriter has been dubbed the "Godfather of Grunge," a moniker that reflects his strong influence on an entire generation of young musicians. He first gained notoriety in the 1960s as part of the band Buffalo Springfield, and was later a member of groups Neil Young and Crazy Horse and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. He has also enjoyed a successful solo career.

Though his songs vary in subject matter, Young often writes and performs music with political and social messages. "Cortez The Killer" is a retelling of the Spanish conquest of South America from the viewpoint of the Aztecs. (The record was banned in Franco's Spain.) "Ohio" was inspired by the Kent State University killings in 1970 and has since been used in anti-war rallies. Though often mistaken for an American anthem, "Rockin' in the Free World" contains lyrics that criticize American government policies. Young recorded "Let's Roll" as a tribute to the heroes of 9/11's Flight 93, which passengers and crew helped bring down in Pennsylvania before it reached its intended target in Washington, DC.

Highlights

  • Young was honored as the 2010 MusiCares Person of the Year for his musical contribution as well as his philanthropic commitment to arts, environmental and humanitarian causes.
  • Young is a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and a two-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (in 1995 for his solo work and again in 1997 as a member of Buffalo Springfield).
